Spiced Apple Chutney

Total Time: 2 hrs 30 mins Preparation Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 2 hrs

Ingredients

  • 1 lb onion, minced
  • 5 lbs apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • 1 1/4 tablespoons dry mustard
  • 10 cloves
  • 8 whole allspice
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 2 1/2 cups brown sugar

Recipe

  • 1 mix together the onions, apples, water, ginger, salt and mustard in a large saucepan.
  • 2 put the cloves and allspice into a muslin bag and add to the saucepan.
  • 3 bring to a boil. reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
  • 4 stir in the vinegar and sugar and simmer uncovered for 1 1/2 hours.
  • 5 remove the muslin bag and when cool, pour the chutney into sterilized jars and seal.
  • 6 may be eaten in a few days.
